Did you happen to walk through Historic Linden Grove Cemetery and Arboretum this past summer? If you did, you know it is a beautiful and peaceful site. If you didn’t, you really missed quite a show. The omnipresent green, the new floral gardens, the Korean War Memorial and the new trees make it quite a special place in the middle of the city.

At more than 22 acres, Historic Linden Grove Cemetery & Arboretum is the largest green space in the heart of Covington and is within easy walking distance of more than 45% of the City’s population. It has nearly 2 miles of walking trails, as well as hundreds of different species of trees and plants. It is the final resting place for many of Covington’s founders, 4 Congressmen, a Civil War general, America’s veterans from every war since the War of 1812 and dozens of other famous and infamous people. Linden Grove is a microcosm of the City’s history.

In June 2014, the Cemetery Board committed $15,000 towards the construction of the new entryway on West 13th Street. In August of the same year, the Friends of Linden Grove, Inc. made a commitment of $5,000 towards the construction of the new entryway. The construction of this new entryway is such a high priority that both organizations unanimously voted to obligate these funds, despite their very limited resources. Even Mother of God Cemetery is helping out on this project – they donated the wrought iron gates from their former entrance which are valued at more than $5,000. The Friends of Linden Grove worked hard to raise the rest of the money needed for the estimated $100,000 cost of the new entryway.

Among the many projects in progress at Linden Grove, there are two special ones for which we are still in search of donors.

Veterans’ Memorial Plaza

The Master Plan design concepts approved by the Cemetery Board detail the development of a Veterans’ Memorial Plaza in the parade ground/assembly area in front of the Speakers’ Platform. The Plaza will be framed by 3 to 6 Columbarium reserved for Veterans only and paved with memorial stone pavers. This project represents a significant and more immediate potential for generating additional income for the Cemetery.

Pedestrian Entrance

A pedestrian entrance gate on Kavanaugh Street opposite Prague Street will provide additional access to the walking trails in the Cemetery. The development of passive recreational opportunities in Linden Grove Cemetery will provide an intrinsic benefit for neighborhood residents, hospital employees and visitors to the area. The need for such additional green space and passive recreational uses is identified as a priority in multiple sections of the “Building Covington’s Future Plan”. Pedestrian entrance gates salvaged from the Cemetery’s original wrought iron fencing from the late 1800’s and stored at the Cemetery will be re-used for this project.
