Headstone Dedication for Civil War Veteran

New Monument Unveiled at Linden Grove on june 26th For Union Army Soldier, Private Jonas A. Curtis.

BIOGRAPHY

Jonas served with company F of the 193rd Ohio Infantry. He enlisted on January 17, 1865 and mustered in on March 11, 1865 in Ohio. He mustered out on August 4, 1865 in Winchester, Virginia.

The burial card from Linden Grove Cemetery indicates that Mr. Curtis died of “consumption of the bowels”, an effect of tuberculosis, at the age of 38 on July 7, 1867. His birthplace was given as St. Louis. He was buried in the City section.

Jonas and Cynthia A. Berry were married in Kenton County on December 31, 1850. The couple had at least 4 children: Louisa A., Benjamin F., James H., and Virginia B. There was also a Jones Curtis buried in Linden Grove Cemetery, aged 3 years, on July 20, 1858. His cause of death was listed as “croup”. The child was buried in the City section.

The widow of Jonas, Cynthia A. (Berry) Curtis applied for a Widow’s pension from the U.S. government on March 29, 1870. The pension was granted, certificate number 144,811.

Cynthia Curtis died at the home of her son, B.F. Curtis, in Bellevue, Kentucky on March 10, 1921. She is buried in Linden Grove Cemetery in Section 15, unknown Range, Lot 006. Cynthia’s father was Archibald Berry.

Jonas’s original military tombstone was provided in 1891 and supplied by Gross Brothers of Lee, Massachusetts.
